Learn to code

Why you need to learn to code

In an exponentially digitizing world, having tech skills – especially coding – can be your ticket to better personal and professional opportunities.

Improves your digital literacy

Digital literacy is your ability to manage, understand and communicate information successfully, using technology. Learning how to code, even to a basic level means that you will automatically become more relaxed in using your devices in day to day life. You will want to discover more tools and applications that you can take advantage of. This will not only improve your day to day usage of technology, but it also means you will be continually discovering and engaging with new tech so you won't be left behind.

If you speak a language you can learn a language

Not unlike learning a new language such as French or Japanese, coding is a language and a form of communication. However, instead of the language being a communication between two individuals, coding is a communication between a person and a device. The programming language we use is our way of telling the computer what we want to do.

One of the most common frustrations for individuals learning how to code is the rooted belief that somehow the computer is in control. Nothing could be further from the truth. As frustrating as it can be, computers are notorious for doing exactly what we have told them to do! We just might need to fine tune our code. Like any language the more you use it the more fluent and articulate you become.

It is a skill that will always be relevant

Almost all companies these days have a technology component to them. There will always be a need for individuals that understand the growing complexities of technology as well as there being an expectation for most people to understand the fundamentals. Regardless of what professional background you may have, the ability to contribute to discussions around applications and technical enhancements means that you are always employable.

It opens up a world of possibilities

Whether you are learning to code for personal reasons or for professional reasons knowledge of how software works and the ability to contribute to developing new software means that there is no limit to the impact that you can have. By learning how to code you have the ability to solve problems, create solutions and bring new ideas to life. What could be better than that?
