Four Questions for Finding your Why

Many people know what they do and some even how they do it but not many people know why they do it. Not only is this true for individuals but it is also true for corporations and small businesses alike. Finding your why and a clear sense of purpose enables you to focus your efforts on what matters most, compelling you to take risks and push forward regardless of the odds or obstacles. Follow the questions below to find your why.

1. What makes you come alive?

The word inspire comes from the Latin, meaning “to breathe life into”. Accordingly when you are working toward things that inspire you, it literally makes you feel more alive. Finding your why is about connecting to a cause that’s bigger than just you, but which is also in alignment with who you are and what you care about.

2. What are your strengths?

When people are in their element they are not only more productive, but are overall more fulfilled. The more you work with your strengths, the easier it is for you to add value and the have more success. Your strengths will lead you to finding your why.

3. Where do you add value?

Doing work that you’re good at, but which you loathe, is not a pathway to fulfilment. The world needs more people that value the work that they do and feel passionate about the contributions that they are making.

If you’re unsure where you add value, try reframing the concept of adding value through the lens of solving problems. This is an excellent way to find your why. Ask yourself what problems you’re well placed and equipped to solve. Base this on your education, skills, knowledge and experience. Focus on the things you’re naturally good at rather than trying to eliminate all your weaknesses.

4. How will you measure your life?

In order to live in alignment with your true purpose you have to decide what you stand for. Therefore, creating the measurement for which you will judge the success of your life.

If you’re unhappy with you’re doing now you have two options:

  • You can completely shift your life and start doing things which are in alignment with your true purpose or;
  • You can shift the metric in which you measure your life. No matter what you do, you can draw meaning from it and find greater purpose through how you do what you do. It begins with your attitude towards the things you do.

There’s many people in the world who know what they do but not enough people that know why they do it. The world needs more people who know their why.
